Colby's non-stop motion is amazing. From the moment he wakes he does not stop moving. Whether its a little hop, a run or doing bicycle kicks during diaper changes he is always moving.
He's also determined, and I admire him for that. Last Thursday we got the one real snow storm of the winter, with a foot of new snow. We went out to play, and diligently trudged through the snow that was up above his knee. Mostly we'd plow a path for him to help, but he wanted to walk the last 30 feet down a hill, then back up a little hill to the road. Doing all that in snow so deep for him often meant he would take one step and fall down. Each time I would help him back up, he'd take another step or maybe two, and then fall down again, more than once getting a face full or powdery snow. He was undeterred, and kept at it - never going more than two steps before falling until his goal was accomplished. It was pretty cool.
He's living a very full life from his perspective. I was thinking again about his birthday weekend. He had been told for months that he had to wait for cake until his birthday. He asked about cake every day, and each time the answer was "wait until your birthday". This anticipation was heightened when he attended other birthday parties and learned the routine of candles and the song. We often had the same reply when he asked about rockets - "wait until your birthday". More than once while Colby slept we could hear him say in his sleep "rockets", which suggests he was dreaming about his favorite subject. So when his birthday came, and his jaw actually dropped before an impossibly big smile broke out when we sang "happy birthday" to him, and to be followed by more cake and actual rockets he was literally living his dreams!
